Minimally Invasive Spine Tumor Surgery
The spine is composed of individual bones (vertebrae) stacked one on top of the other in a column. Each vertebra possesses a cylindrical body, which participates in weight bearing and an arch of bone (laminae and spinous processes) which protects the spinal cord and its coverings. The bony arch is connected to the body by two small columns of bone (pedicles). The circular canal between the body, arch, and pedicles houses the spinal cord and is called the spinal canal.

The spinal cord is contained within the spinal canal and is covered by a
layer of connective tissue, the dura mater. Tumors which are located
outside the dura are called extradural. These are usually metastatic
tumors and most often arise in the vertebrae themselves. Tumors arising
inside the dura, but outside the actual substance of the spinal cord are
termed intradural-extramedullary. These are usually nerve sheath tumors
or meningiomas. Tumors arising within the substance of the spinal cord
itself are called intramedullary tumors. These are usually astrocytomas
or ependymomas. Different types of tumors often behave differently and
require different treatments.
Symptoms
The symptoms of the spinal tumors are caused because of the weakening
of the structure of the vertebrae and spinal nerve compression. The
symptoms are
1. The warning signs are starting with the sensitivity decreased and
incontinence happening in the buttocks or saddle area. It is caused from
the spinal cord compression because of the tumor formed.
2. The person starts feeling lower extremity weakness.
3. The loss of sensory is another symptom.
4. It may also lead to onset paralysis.
5. The person experiences the back pain and this pain may spread to the other parts of the body. The back pain will be severe and more during the nights.

Diagnosis
Generally diagnosing the tumours present in the spinal cord would be
difficult. It is because the specified symptoms can possibly wrongly
attributed towards the other spinal diseases. Initially, bone scan will
be conducted in order to confirm the other possible spinal metastasis to
be excluded. When the tumour is rapidly identified and malignant spinal
tumors are intervention that causes the compression of the spinal cord,
the problem can be treated and solved easily.
The other possible diagnosis is MRI. The diagnosis can result in
finding the location of the tunors, its relation with the corresponding
spinal cord along with the risk associated with the compression of the
cord.
Treatment of Spinal Tumors in India
A neurosurgeon determines that a tumor is operable or not. The purpose
of the surgery is to remove the tumor as much as possible without
affecting any neurological function. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy
are of little help and in few treatments where protocols are provided.
For treating benign and malignant primary tumors, surgery is usually
recommended. Surgery is a successful treatment for removing tumors that
are located outside the spinal cord. The removal of vertebrae can also
prove beneficial for easing pain and symptoms by decreasing pressure on
the spinal nerves. The treatment of secondary tumors that has spread to
the spinal cord depends on the kind of cancer. Radiation therapy is the
main treatment for primary tumors where the spinal cord is compressed.
For regaining strength and muscle control after surgery or radiation
therapy, physical therapy is sometimes required.
Spinal Decompression Surgery
The surgery that uses different procedures for reducing symptoms due to
compression or pressure on the nerves roots or the spinal cord is known
as spinal decompression surgery. Thickened joints, collapsed or bulging
discs, bony growths and loosened ligaments may narrow the spinal nerve
openings and the spinal canal that also results in irritation.
Spinal Stenosis Surgery
When the spinal column narrows due to pressure on the spinal cord or
narrowing of the neural foramina and where the spinal nerve exit from
the spinal column is known as spinal stenosis.
Cyberknife
Radiosurgery system is used in Cyberknife VSI technique. This technique
delivers precise doses of radiation to spine tumors without affecting
nearby structures and tissues. This technique can even treat inoperable
tumors and cybeknife technique combined with chemotherapy and surgery
can provide many benefits as compared to traditional radiation therapy.
Some of its benefits include
- Less recovery time and with no side effects
- Painless and non-invasive technique
-
